The fellowship is committed to improving training in dialysis access surgery, which is known to be inconsistent throughout Europe with trainees experience being largely dependent on the units that a trainee has worked in. This well established fellowship offers one-to-one tuition in the provision of the full range of renal access procedures, clinically, planning and surveillance imaging (duplex), averaging 30-40 surgical procedures over a sixteen day programme, spread over an eight week duration. In this way a novice can become competent in these techniques in a short, focused period of time with provision of adequate case numbers and exposure which is particularly crucial during this current climate of restricted training times. The Fellowship has been running for almost 4 years with excellent feedback from the trainees. On completion of the fellowship, 87.5% of the candidates felt able to undertake basic fistula surgery without supervision and felt capable of offering a basic renal access surgery service in their own practice. The fellowship is directed towards senior trainees (ST6 and above and young consultants). The fellowship is formally accredited by the SAC for vascular surgery and the London deanery.
The Fellowship is being run throughout the year.
